Waterbeach Rail Action is an independent, resident-led group working to protect and improve rail services for Waterbeach and the surrounding communities.
The existing Waterbeach railway station faces closure as part of plans to relocate services to a new station approximately 2.4 kilometres (1.5 miles) to the north.
We believe decisions about the future of our railway should be based on robust evidence, transparent decision-making and meaningful consultation with the people affected.
Our aim is to bring together residents, rail users and local organisations to scrutinise the proposals, share information and ensure the community's voice is heard.
1. The original case for closure has collapsed.
The case for relocating Waterbeach station was made in 2018, based on assumptions about housing development, railway infrastructure and the benefits of relocation. Much has changed since then. Waterbeach Rail Action shows that the original justification for closing the existing station no longer stands.
2. The evidence points to major harm to residents.
Our survey of more than 1,200 residents and station users, as well as 798 written testimonies, indicates that closure would substantially reduce rail use, increase car journeys and make travel more difficult for many existing passengers, particularly those who rely on walking to the station.
3. Closure has not been authorised — the public still has a say.
Planning permission for the new station does not authorise closure of the existing one. Closure requires a separate statutory process, including public consultation, under the Railways Act 2005. The decision has not yet been made, and residents can participate in that process.
Waterbeach Rail Action is calling for a full, transparent assessment of retaining both stations before any closure decision is taken.
